Tourist Visa
No prior visas are required, as visitors receive a 30-day visa on arrival provided that they have valid travel documents (Possession of a valid international travel document issued by the Government of a Sovereign State, Possession of a valid return air ticket to a destination where the passenger has permission to enter, together with necessary visas for the onward journey to the next destination, Possession of minimum of US$100.00 per person per day or confirmed hotel reservation for the intended period of stay in the Maldives. However, an entry permit does not permit visitors to take up employment, set up any business or conduct any professional activities (paid or unpaid) except with the consent of the government and in compliance with pertinent laws and regulations of the Maldives.
Prohibited Items
Strict laws prohibit the import of pornographic materials and weapons into the country, and the penalties are severe. Narcotic Drugs are strictly prohibited; the penalty for importing drug for any purpose is life Imprisonment. Alcohol cannot be imported without an official license, if imported without a license it should be declared at the customs and will be returned to you on departure. Wide ranges of alcoholic drinks are available in the resorts. The export of coral, shells, and other objects removed from their marine habitat is prohibited in the Maldives. Please assist us in preserving our environment by taking only photographs and memories with you while leaving only footprints.
Clothing
The Maldives climate remains warm year-round, ideal for light summer attire like cotton linen wear, t-shirts, beachwear, skirts, slacks, and shorts. Dressing up for dinner is common, but formalwear is not necessary. Trendy sportswear and leisurewear are popular choices. While it's easy to go barefoot in resorts, casual shoes or sandals are recommended for other islands, especially where streets are compact sand or paved in the capital. Nudity is prohibited, so bikinis or swimming trunks are a must on beaches, at resorts, and while swimming or snorkeling. Visiting inhabited islands or the capital requires neat dressing, with skirts and shorts of appropriate length and sleeved blouses. It's important to respect local norms, culture, and traditions, particularly when visiting inhabited islands.
Currency
The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa and One Rufiyaa is equivalent to 100 laari. On the other hand, One US$ is equivalent to approximately 15.85 Rufiyaa. Most major foreign currencies are accepted with the US Dollar used as the benchmark. Rufiyaa bank notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100,500 and 1000. Travelers’ Checks and credit cards are widely accepted. The commonly used credit cards are American Express, Visa, Master Card, Diners Club, JCB and Euro Card.
