Male', The Capital City

Male’, the capital of the Maldives, serves as the main gateway for visitors arriving at Velana International Airport. Despite its small size – about 2km long and 1km wide – Male’ offers various services typical of any capital city. Although many visitors bypass Male’ and head straight to their resort islands, some opt for transit hotels in Male’ or Hulhumale. Hulhumale, an artificial reclamation island, is larger than Male’ and can be explored in just over an hour on foot. Even though visitors often head directly to their resorts, many take day trips organized by the resorts to explore Male’. Despite its small size and dense population of around 70,000, Male’ offers essential services such as a post office, internet access, bookshops, travel agents, and numerous eateries.

Male' features several points of interest, including the grand Islamic center and mosque. The Hukuru Miskiiy mosque, dating back to the 1650s, is the oldest mosque in Male'. Additionally, the National Museum showcases artifacts once owned by the Sultans, while Muleeaage, initially built as a palace, is now used as the presidential residence.
